21 buildings is an artistic and architectural research unfolding in parallel to a large-scale real estate operation in the European Quarter in Brussels. For a duration of two years starting from January 2025, the project explores alternative narratives and practices on how to transform institutional buildings for a ecologically and socially just future along real-life testing grounds in the city.
The collaboration between noAarchitecten, optimist office and theatre maker Thomas Bellinck aims to develop a discourse with what and who is already there. Aiming to build a platform for research which allows a new generation of architects to explore a deeper understanding of the economic and political drivers influencing the development of our built environment in light of the climate crisis.

21 buildings is een artistiek en architecturaal onderzoek dat parallel loopt aan een grootschalig vastgoedproject in de Europese wijk in Brussel. Gedurende twee jaar, met ingang van januari 2025, onderzoekt het project alternatieve visies en werkwijzen voor de transformatie van institutionele gebouwen met het oog op een ecologisch en sociaal rechtvaardige toekomst, aan de hand van praktijkgerichte proeflocaties in de stad.
De samenwerking tussen noAarchitecten, optimist office en theatermaker Thomas Bellinck heeft tot doel een dialoog te ontwikkelen met wat en wie er al aanwezig is. Het doel is een onderzoeksplatform te creëren dat een nieuwe generatie architecten in staat stelt een dieper inzicht te verwerven in de economische en politieke drijfveren die de ontwikkeling van onze gebouwde omgeving beïnvloeden in het licht van de klimaatcrisis.
